Protest in Athens

*updated*

The park in front of Greek Parliament served a base camp for some of the protesters and their organizations. It is much too hot during the day to protest (or do much of anything), so people napped an relaxed in preparation for the evening's demonstrations.

Signs and slogans were strung up everywhere around Parliament.

These protests do not seem to follow boundaries of age, gender, or social status. College aged kids were joined by elderly men and women, families with small children, and middle aged people arriving after work.

Riot police line up when the protest begins.

Protest leaders shout chants and songs.

The crowds swell as people pour in from all around. The leaders of the protests refer to themselves as "The Indignant Spartans," and are seen in this picture carrying a banner in english (which was also reproduced in Greek and Spanish).

The protest continued into the night.
