Athens

Leaving Romania.

Most of Romania is flat and used as farmland.

Most of central Athens is grungy and congested. Right in the center, however, is the ancient Greek Acropolis.

The Acropolis is pretty much the main reason to visit Athens. Needless to say, the pathways of the park become a sea of people during the day.

This was the most complete building in the entire site, and one of the most stylistically complex in all of Athens.

Parts of the Acropolis were destroyed in the 17th century during Venetian bombardment. The Greek Government is now working on a multi-decade project to restore as much of it as possible, using original stones as well as new marble. Here workmen prepare to lift a massive block of marble for use in the Parthenon.

The Parthenon.

Our time on the famous Greek Isles consisted entirely of a sleepless night on the pier in Chios waiting for a connecting ferry.

Finally it came. The Greek Isles are mostly scrubby trees and sun bleached rock.
