Carved out by glaciers, the Saguenay River is exceptionally deep and cold. The mixing of freshwater and salter water as well as an underwater mountain at the mouth make the area an excellent feeding ground for a variety of whale species. The wild topography of the region is protected as one of Canada's national parks.
